Men:
Fagin:
M, 50s-60s. Baritone. Leader of a gang of child pickpockets. Charismatic and energetic, but with a strange and maybe slightly sinister presence. Not evil to the core but generally more concerned with making money than with the welfare of his students. Suggested song: Reviewing the Situation. (Section G to end)

Bill Sykes:
M, 30s. Bass/Baritone. A graduate of Fagin’s gang, Bill is a fierce thief and threatening brute. Underneath a rough and menacing exterior he has a handsome magnetism. Suggested song: My Name (section A&B)

Mr. Bumble:
M, 30s-50s. Baritone. A self-important and pompous beadle, in charge of the workhouse with the Widow Corney. An inflated sense of his own worth and importance. May double in some crowd scenes in Act 2. Strong singer and comic. Heavyset.

Mr. Sowerberry:
M, 30s-60s. Baritone. Runs a funeral parlor and uniquely suited to do so. Proud of his macabre profession. A bit odd, but not evil to the core. Will also appear in various crowd scenes.

Noah Claypole:
M, plays late teens-20s. Any range. A pompous, entitled youth who frequents the funeral parlor. Featured dialogue in one scene, also appears in various crowd scenes. Ensemble singing only.

Mr. Brownlow:
M, 40s-60s. Non-singing role. A kindly grandfatherly man with a tough, confident bearing. Please prepare monologue with standard British accent.

Bow Street Runners (2):
M, 20s-40s. Bass/Baritone. Two men to appear as policemen and misc. crowd in various scenes throughout the show. Some featured dialogue. Will sing featured Knife Grinder and Long Song Seller tracks (Who Will Buy) and some ensemble singing in other numbers.

Dr. Grimwig:
M, 30s-60s. Any range. A pompous but generally jolly doctor. Featured dialogue in one scene, appears as part of crowd in other scenes. Ensemble singing only.

Chairman/Ensemble:
M, 20s-50s. Any range. Any type. An ensemble track appearing in various crowd scenes throughout show. Brief featured dialogue as Chairman. Ensemble singing only.

Women:
Nancy:
F, 20s-30s. Alto. A member of Fagin’s gang. Beneath a rough weathered exterior she is a fragile romantic. Loves Bill against her better judgment, and develops a mother’s love for Oliver. Confident and brash one moment, anxious and frightened the next. Strong singer. Suggested song: As Long as He Needs Me (G to the end).

Widow Corney:
F, 30s-50s. Soprano. Runs the workhouse with Mr. Bumble, eventually becomes his wife. Brash and over-bearing. Knows what she wants. In charge. Will also appear in some crowd scenes. Heavyset.

Mrs. Sowerberry:
F, 30s-60s. Mezzo. Like her husband, a dark strangeness to her but not necessarily wicked. Capable of sympathy but mainly looking out for herself. Will also sing featured Milk Maid track (Who Will Buy) and appear in some crowd scenes.

Charlotte:
F, plays late teens-20s. Mezzo/Soprano. Daughter of the Sowerberry’s. Entitled and snotty. Featured dialogue in one scene, appears as crowd in some others. Will sing featured Rose Seller track (Who Will Buy).

Bet:
F, plays mid/late teens. Mezzo/Alto. Nancy’s sister and friend, another member of Fagin’s gang. Not jaded like Nancy, she still believes in the value of the thieves’ life. Some solo singing. May double as workhouse boy in first scene.

Mrs. Bedwin:
F, 40s-70s. Soprano. Mr. Brownlow’s housekeeper. A pleasant motherly woman. Brief solo singing. Will also appear as Old Sally and some crowd/street scenes with some ensemble singing.

Pauper Assistants (2):
F, 20s-50s. Soprano/any range. Ensemble tracks with appearances in various crowd/street scenes and some ensemble singing. One will sing the featured Strawberry Seller track, soprano (Who Will Buy). The other will play the Old Lady in workhouse.

Directions: Take the R to 9th St. or the F to 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. The “R” can be accessed at the Pacific/Atlantic station in Brooklyn which is served by the 2,3,4,5,N,B,D and Q trains from Manhattan.

Equity audition procedures are NOT in effect, although AEA members receive priority. No Equity monitor provided. Producer runs all aspects of the audition.

Notes/What to bring:
Actors auditioning for Fagin, Bill Sykes and Nancy are strongly encouraged to prepare the suggested song. Those auditioning for other characters may prepare 16-32 bars of a classic golden age or golden age-inspired Broadway tune, or something from the show. Cockney or British accents are encouraged if appropriate to the song/character. No pop/rock. Bring sheet music in the correct key, no lead sheets. Dance auditions, when applicable, will take place at callbacks.
