Broadway Grosses w/e 5/6/2018: What did the Tony nominations do to the grosses?
The answer?
Not much.
The irony of this time of year, when we’re celebrating the best of the best in our industry, is that there aren’t a lot of folks buying Broadway tickets.
That’s why grosses fell 5% last week, despite the massive amounts of press that the nominated shows received.
Does that mean that people didn’t buy tickets for the shows that got lots of ‘award kudos’? Not on your life. They absolutely did buy tickets . . . they just bought them for future performances.
We don’t publish “wraps” in our business (a “wrap” is a show’s daily take for ANY performance on sale), but I’d bet money that if we did, they would have been up from the previous week.
Instead, we’ll have to deal with the bit of our expected seasonal decline this time of year.
And we’ll dream of the golden summer months to come.
