Broadway took a sharp post-Labor Day tumble, with total grosses down 17.94% from last week to $25.1M and overall capacity falling to just 81%. The downturn was widespread, with nearly every production showing losses—The Outsiders (-$447,603), The Lion King (-$424,056), and MJ (-$313,133) among the steepest drops. Tourist favorites Aladdin (-$362,461) and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (-$280,876) also took significant hits. While Hamilton held steady at $2.15M, the strongest of the week, Wicked also remained consistent at $2M and full capacity, making it the most stable of the top-tier earners.

There were, however, a few standouts amid the slump. Art began previews at the Music Box with a remarkable $1.25M from eight shows, selling at an impressive $162 average ticket and playing to 97% capacity. John Proctor Is the Villain closed on September 7 with its best week yet, climbing $216,487 to $1.05M, while Hadestown and Oh, Mary! both managed to hold steady against the broader downturn. Just In Time continued to play above capacity with $1.2M, maintaining its strong premium pricing. Compared to the same week last season, grosses fell 10.64%, a reflection of Labor Day’s calendar shift combined with the traditional September slowdown. With new plays like Art entering the mix and a slate of fall openings on the horizon, the market will be looking to rebound in the coming weeks.
