Broadway Grosses w/e 2/25/2018: It’s not freezing in Feb. It’s Frozen.
The new spring season has officially begun, as two new shows hit the boards this week, including one that helped keep this lukewarm week from being an outright chill at the box office.
That show, was none other than the highly anticipated Frozen.
People have been chatting about Frozen becoming a Broadway musical since the first three notes of “Let It Go” were ever sung. And now, in what has got to be a record for the time it took to turn a blockbuster movie into a musical, it has moved into the St. James, where it just may sit until, well, the next ice age.
It’s off to a strong start with almost $1mm in sales for only four performances (and word on the street is that they had some comps in last week to get their party started, plus the usual production seats, etc.). That means $2.5 – $3mm grosses are well within their sights.
And another highly anticipated show, of a similar theme (not!), also jumped onto the boards last week. That show would be none other than Angels in America, which sold $322k on only three performances.
We were only up over last season by about 6% (yes, it’s true, we’re giving back some of our gains from earlier this year), and this 6% is largely due to these new shows stepping onto a stage.
Let’s just hope that all the rest of the shows keep their heads above their non-frozen water, as we’ve got another crappy week to come before it starts getting rosy again.
