Broadway Grosses w/e 3/18/2018: Spring Break has sprung.
The Ides of March has brought some life to the Broadway box office, as private high schools and colleges have unleashed their students for Spring Break, for a couple weeks of mayhem and musicals.
Grosses took a leap, due in part to the many student groups that packed mid-week matinees and more. Group businesses are pretty minimal during January and February since schools and such fear bad weather will prevent them getting to the city.
Think about it . . . what happens if school is canceled and a group has purchased 200 tickets?
The answer is most shows accommodate them later . . . but it’s a logistical nightmare, so most schools just wait until there is more of a guarantee that there will be no snow on the streets.
And March is when they start to come back to the city.
That’s why grosses are up, especially in the more group friendly or “family” musicals.
Newcomers Mean Girls and Frozen are off to strong starts (are you surprised?) as grosses overall were up 6% over last season.
And this was only the first week of Spring Break.
