Broadway Grosses w/e 3/4/2018: Forget the Ides, Beware the Beginning of March!
Last week was one of the worst of the year.
You wouldn’t think that the first week of March would be such a disappointment, but historically, it has a nasty reputation . . . and she didn’t disappoint this year.
Blech.
And the week was made even a little worse with that weird wind-whipping late winter storm we saw on Friday, and Oscar Sunday, which keeps almost as many people home as the Super Bowl.
There were only eight shows that were in the million dollar club last week, and many a show that usually flirts with the high six figures, was in the mid-six figures instead. (One of the reasons for the big chunk out of everyone’s grosses is that with depressed demand, but more shows (hello spring season), the grosses are diluted. There’s just more competition at the TKTS booth than there was a few months ago.)
Things should pick up a bit this week, and then we get to the two March vacation weeks, when groups start to climb back into their buses and make their way to the city.
And for some shows, those tourists will arrive just in the nick of time.
Here are the Broadway grosses for the week ending March 4th, 2018:
