Broadway Grosses w/e 4/1/2018: The Easter Bunny Brings Good Business to Broadway.
The Broadway Box Office hopped ahead last week, thanks to the Easter/Passover and Spring Breaks taken by so many around the country.
One look at some of the top performers this week and you’ll get a sense of who was in the city. When Lion King does $3mm and SpongeBob does $1mm, you can bet that there are families in town.
But one of the most interesting grosses to me is the almost $1.5 that Mean Girls posted . . . in previews. That show had a good advance coming in, but posting these kinds of figures before opening suggests word-of-mouth is positive and getting traction.
Overall, we had five of the thirty-five shows running, or over 14% of all shows, put up grosses in excess of $2mm.
And if I had blog-dicted (that’s a “blog prediction” for those who don’t speak abrevs) that so many shows would be doing those sorts of #s a few years ago, you would have laughed me off the blogosphere.
But the only ones laughing now are those shows laughing all the way to the B-A-N-K.
And this week could be even better than the last.
