Broadway Grosses w/e 4/8/2018: At least the sun is shining on the box office!
Spring may be stuck but at least we’ve got some big box office grosses to keep us warm as winter sticks around.
Broadway set a record last week for the best performing non-Holiday week ever, thanks in part to a few late arrivals this season that we all knew would buoy our box office.
Harry Potter debuted at $2.1mm and set a record for a gross for a play . . . a record, mind you, that it will probably crush every week, from here on out. I’d expect Harry to hit $3mm before you can say, “explodious box officus!”
Frozen did over $2.2, which, when added to the gross of The Lion King and Aladdin, represented over 15% of Broadway’s total gross! That’s some pretty good market share, no? Mean Girls was over $1.1mm in its opening (and therefore papered week), and the 7.5 hour Angels in America nipped at the heels of the million dollar club. With all these rookies doing so well, it’s no wonder why we were up over 20% compared to the same frame last year, especially during this spring break week.
Right now, this season has given us more winners than not . . . which means, expect the real estate crunch to get a little tighter, as some of these shows settle into long, long runs.
Here are the Broadway grosses for the week ending April 8, 2018:
