Broadway Grosses w/e 5/13/2018: Let’s Hear it for the Plays!
Just like a $100 bill will always feel like a lot of money, no matter what inflation does to the value of a dollar, $1mm at a Broadway box office will always be a big deal.
Musicals can cross that threshold pretty easily these days, but plays? It’s the equivalent of trying to land a Triple Axel in the Olympics with a broken skate string and an overbearing mother (can you tell I just watched I, Tonya?)
Harry Potter accomplished this pretty easily when it opened (does it really count as a play?). This past week, Iceman crossed the magic line, and we had both Angels and Three Tall Women flirting with it, and posting grosses in the $900Ks.Not too shabby.
Overall, last week was a bit of a surprise for most of the street, as grosses increased by 14.9% over the same frame last year, with Tony noms and Mothers Day fueling the bump.
Expect another mini-bump this week and even next, as Memorial Day and the start of summer fun is just around the corner.
Here are the Broadway grosses for the week ending May 13, 2018:
