Broadway Grosses w/e 8/27/2017 – Summer is slip, slidin’ away.
The good news is. . . the current week is going to be a good one, thanks to the long Labor Day weekend.
The bad news is . . . we had to get through last week to get to this one.
Even Hamilton couldn’t crack $3mm last week! The horror! The outrage!
Overall, grosses dropped a touch over 7% as we shed over $2mm for our industry totals. But just like a dog’s, this shedding is totally expected, and hopefully, shows planned for it.
And when the grosses drop like this, you can start to see cracks in the foundations of some shows that you thought might be a bit more resilient. In fact, I’m predicting that at least one show will announce its closing earlier than anyone anticipated. Because if there are cracks showing now, what will the middle of September be like?
Right now General Managers all over the city are overheating their Microsoft Excels, calculating if profits made in Q4 (holiday times!) will make up for the losses incurred during Q3.
Will it be worth it to stay open?
We’ll find out soon enough.
