The recent announcement of the closing of Rent made me think of one of my favorite quotes.

When Jonathan Larson’s sister accepted the Tony Award on his behalf, she said: “It took Johnnie 15 years of really hard work to become an overnight sensation.”

Very few people in this business, or in this world, “make-it” without a whole lot of work.  It may look like people just “arrive”, but it rarely happens that way.

So don’t waste time wondering how someone got lucky enough to have written or have produced Rent.  Just keep working and working hard, and you’ll be discovered as well.  It just may take 15 years.  But when you love what you do, and Jonathan did, who cares how long it takes.

And then, when it does happen (and it will), it’ll feel even better.
