The Department of Doing

I have a friend working overseas who walked by a storefront recently advertising a company called The Department of Doing.
Sounds like a company we all should be working for, doesn’t it?
The same friend happens to work with a company tied closely to the government.  Here’s what she had to say about her current gig (bolded words mine):

In my new land of government employees where some offices actually shut off the
lights and lock the doors during lunch and promptly at 4pm to end the day and my peers down the hall are constantly watching football,  I am very disgusted
to admit that this is where our taxpayers dollars are going.  Imagine just how
much more would get done with the government as a whole if people could just
write one more e-mail or finish up one more phone call
that might at most,
extend their work day to 4:30.

This isn’t a government bashing-blog (although if anyone from the Obama administration wants to know where this lazy outfit is, email me here).
This is a blog to help us all figure out how to be better Producers, of theater, of art, of dog food or whatever, and my friend has a great practical tip on how to get that much closer to your goal.
At the end of your day, when you’re ready to head home, go to sleep, watch tv, whatever . . . just do one more thing.  Just one more.  Send one more email, make one more call, search for one more thing on Google.  How long could it take?  1 minute?  2 minutes?  5?  Is that really too much to ask for getting that much closer to what it is that you truly want?
Sure, it’s a small thing . . . but lots of small things add up to one big thing over time.
I cut out the photo in this blog and have put it on my desk where I can see it everyday.
Because The Department of Doing is a company that I want to work for the rest of my life.  And so should you.
