SEEKING:

Lord Windermere:
(30s) Only speaks the truth. In love with his wife completely. Until now, they have never had a fight. He’s secretly been giving money to Mrs. Erlynne so as to protect his wife from finding out her true identity. At the end of Act 1 he says: “The shame would kill her.”

Lord Darlington:
(30s) Oscar Wilde’s typical dandy in Act 1 – shamelessly flirts with Lady Windermere and tells her how he despises social convention. In Act 2, he reveals his love for her when she is vulnerable and tries to convince her to run away with him. Once he becomes serious about his love, he can no longer maintain the dandy’s irreverent pose.

Lord Augustus Lorton:
(mid 40s-late 50s) A somewhat inarticulate buffoon who is in love with Mrs. Erlynne and cannot deny her anything, even to the detriment of his reputation. Lord Augustus Lorton: (mid 40s-late 50s) A somewhat inarticulate buffoon who is in love with Mrs. Erlynne and cannot deny her anything, even to the detriment of his reputation.

Mr. Cecil Graham:
(20s-Early 30s). A dandy. Witty and charming. He & Mr. Dumby make a sport of gossip and take every opportunity to mock Lord Augustus.

Mr. Dumby:
Similar to Graham; perhaps a bit older.

Mrs. Erlynne:
(late 30s-early 40s) The woman with a past. Years ago she was cast out of society for leaving her husband & infant child and running off with a lover. When she reads in the paper that her daughter has married Lord Windermere, a rich man, she seeks him out and blackmails him – vowing that unless he helps her get back into society, she will bring shame upon his wife by revealing her true identity to all of London. When Mrs. Erlynne discovers that Lady Windermere is about to repeat her own actions by leaving Lord Windermere and her infant son, Mrs. Erlynne discovers she has “a heart” and sacrifices her own reputation to save her daughter’s marriage. At the end of the play, Mrs. Erlynne reveals that she now knows what it means to be a mother.
