A beautiful French immigrant arrives in New York Harbor – there’s something different about her, something larger than life. Liberty tells the story of one statuesque immigrant’s struggle, strife and success in the ever-evolving country she’s come to symbolize. Lady Liberty herself is the show’s protagonist – she is destined for greatness, yet scorned by America upon her arrival. A timeless commentary on society and politics, Liberty is a 90-minute traditional musical with a contemporary sound.
SEEKING:
Note: "All performers must be excellent singers."
Liberty: Woman, early 20s, any ethnicity (of indeterminate origin). Beautiful and charismatic. Radiant, exotic. Initially an innocent and optimistic young immigrant, she becomes a symbol of strength and freedom. Performer must be an incredible singer (alto/mezzo) with a tremendous contemporary sound, strong pop stylings and a very wide vocal range.
Francis Walker: Caucasian man, 30s – mid 40s. All-American, leading man-type with political aspirations. Strong baritone.
Frederic Bartholdi/Paddy O’Dublin/Joseph Pulitzer: Multiple role for one actor. Bartholdi: 40s – 50s. Liberty’s father. Comic French accent. Paddy: Successful Irish immigrant, with Irish brogue. Construction foreman who manages the workers building the Williamsburg Bridge. Pulitzer: Newspaper mogul. Fast-talker. Hungarian accent. Tenor.
Regina Schuyler: Caucasian woman, 40s – 60s. Society widow. Role for a comic character actress. Alto/mezzo with belt preferred.
James Goodleaf: Native American man, 20s. Iron worker. Trying to find his place building the city, but stymied at every turn. Tenor with rock sensibility.
Emma Lazarus: Caucasian woman, 20s. Upper class poet. A reformer, in spite of her family’s disapproval. Soprano.
Olga Moscowitz: Russian Jewish woman, 30s – 40s. Successful immigrant. Russian/Yiddish accent. Pushcart peddler. Role for a comic character actress. Alto/mezzo.
Samuel Ferguson: African American man, 30s – mid 40s. A stonecutter, but he takes whatever work he can get. Formerly a slave, he is not convinced that Liberty has a place in the US. Baritone/bass.
Giovanni Ferro: Boy, 8 – 10. boy. A street urchin. Italian accent. Scrappy and ambitious. Boy soprano whose voice has not changed.
