Broadway experienced a sharp post-holiday correction this week, with total grosses falling 34.05% from the prior week to $34.32M and attendance dropping to 272,911, as New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day moved out of the reporting frame. Despite the downturn, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child once again topped the board, leading Broadway with $2.65M at full capacity and a strong $204 average ticket. Hamilton dipped significantly from its holiday peak but still posted a formidable $2.18M at over 100% capacity, while Wicked followed with $2.07M, selling out every performance at the Gershwin. The Lion King also cooled from its Christmas surge, falling $1.44M week-over-week but remaining a top-tier earner at $1.71M.
Elsewhere, several shows showed resilience amid the seasonal pullback. Just In Time continued to outperform the market with $1.46M and an exceptional $257 average paid admission, while Chess remained strong at $1.67M and 95% capacity. Among plays, Stranger Things: The First Shadow led the field with $1.66M, followed closely by Oh, Mary! ($981K) and Oedipus ($865K). Compared to the same week last season—when New Year’s fell within the reporting period—grosses were down 24.00%, underscoring the expected January reset as Broadway transitions out of its most lucrative stretch and into the winter development window.
