Broadway Grosses w/e 10/8/2017: Columbus Day brings smooth sailing . . .
It doesn’t take a genius to discover that holiday weekends bring big-time grosses.
And this Columbus Day weekend was no exception.
Thankfully, September, with all its back-to-school nonsense, is in our rear-view mirror. And with our first long weekend of the fall, our grosses increased a whopping 30% from the week before.
Phew.
Part of the reason for that boost was that the new fall season is officially underway with several shows setting up shop on Broadway with Junk, M. Butterfly, Springsteen on Broadway, and The Band’s Visit, all performing notably well and accumulating almost 10% of total grosses. As we suspected, Bruce brought in a boss-sized chunk at $2.3mm.
New shows aside, the tourists were discovering the “old world” as well as we saw an increase in numbers for some longer-runners such as Chicago, Cats, Kinky Boots, The Lion King, Phantom, and Wicked.
