Broadway Grosses* w/e 6/4/2017 – The season is off to a slow start.
Hey, Gross Fans!
The week after holiday weekends are often a bit sluggish (a ton of people just traveled – so last weekend they stayed home!), and that trend proves true, with grosses and attendance down about 4%.
And while Memorial Day is the “official start of summer,” we don’t tend to see summer business really take off until those public schools let out for summer break later this month.
Of course, all eyes and ears and other body parts are focused solely on the Tony Awards this Sunday night. What shows will explode at the box office on Monday morning? What shows will bid the Great White Way a fond farewell? Hard to focus on the grosses on one week, when so many shows’ destinies will be decided in just a few short days.
(P.S. I mean, Lion King . . . come on . . . $2mm last week? Does anyone remember that this show opened almost 20 years ago? Lions are the new Cats. Now and Foreve-roar!)
