ABOUT: Deeply moving and funny new play exploring the universe of a small American town. As a friendship develops between long-time resident John Dodge and new arrival Mary Swanson, the lives of the inhabitants of Middletown intersect in strange and poignant ways. Play journeys from the local library to outer space and points between.

SEEKING (all roles available):

Public Speaker / Male Doctor / Greg:
Late 30s to 50s. Businesslike person. He's caring and sensitive, but as above, frank and not fussy.

Cop:
30s-40s. This is NOT a NY cop. He's a small town police officer and grew up in the town. He wears the authority of his position comfortably and is NOT a ruffian with a low-class accent. He's a powerful type who can underplay his power, rather than a lighter type trying to be tough.

Mrs. Swanson:
Smart, decent, attractive woman. She is very quick, but, as above, doesn't make a big show of her quickness. She is resourceful, but grateful for human kindness and warmth. 30s, very early 40s.

Librarian:
60s or so. Warm, sweet, bright. Intellectually curious. Understanding. Proud of her town and its people. Happy to be helpful and supportive.

John Dodge:
Late 30s, early 40s. Perfectly smart and decent guy; though he's haunted by a couple of simple things, he isn't the type to act or seem haunted. He suffers from loneliness, in a general and a particular way. He may also have a larger deeper problem, which he's happy to avoid with hobbies and reading and busy-work. Direct way of talking.

Mechanic:
30s, male. He is a scrappy type, very smart in a non-bookish way. Troubled, a little wrecked, but not overtly tragic. He likes drinking and drugs. He wants to be beautiful. Happy to try out some philosophy and see if it lands, though he wouldn't make it entirely clear that's what he was doing, in case it didn't work. Kind of a "non-actor" type.

Tour Guide / Attendant / Classical Music host:
Late 20s, 30s. Matter of fact. Attendant, in particular, is sensitive and caring, but in that great way that nurses and real caregivers can be. Particular type, but not fussy.

Male Tourist / Freelancer / Radio Host Of Science Show:
30s, early 40s. Matter of fact, dry, a little clinical. Freelancer is a little bit enthused about himself.

Female Tourist / Woman On Date During Intermission / Attendant 2:
Late 20s, early 30s. Dry, as above, particular but not complicated.

Aunt / Female Doctor / Intercom:
40s-50s. Matter of fact, down-to-earth. Sympathetic and caring, but also firm and businesslike.

Sweetheart:
Late teens, early 20s. Perhaps odd, complicated-seeming, perhaps troubled-seeming.

Ground Control / Man On Date During Intermission / Landscaper / Janitor:

30s. Regular-joe type. Perhaps given to sarcasm, though dry. Not an unlikable type though, just a guy.
