Are Broadway shows closing faster?

I don’t know about you, but this year, post Tonys, it felt like more shows closed (or announced) than is typical.

Any guesses for how many shows closed in the three month post Tony period this year?

No cheating.

Sixteen. And there’s nothing sweet about it.

Sixteen shows have closed or are about to close since the Tony Awards in June 2025.

Seems like a lot?

It IS a lot.

How do we know?

We looked back over the previous 10 years to find the average number of shows that close in this three-month period.

That average? 10.2.

Over the last decade on Broadway, 10.2 shows have closed every year in the 3-month period following the Tony Awards.

This year? 16.  More than a 50% increase.

Now yes, there were a number of shows that were previously scheduled as limited runs with an announced closing date in this 3-month window. So naturally, that number drives up this data a little bit.

But there are always limited runs in that average.

So what are the takeaways from this whopping increase in the number of shows that closed this year?

1 – We’re doing more limited runs on Broadway (and on the West End) than in recent history.

2 – Shows are closing faster than they have before due to increased operating costs, which causes shows to burn through their opening reserve, leaving them with no choice but to close.

Hopefully this was an anomaly.  But we’ll know more when we get to the Christmas/New Year’s batch of closings (there are always a bunch).  If that number is more than usual, then this will officially be a trend.
