Ever wanted to be an Editor? Hope so, because you are one.

Ready for this revelation?  You’re an editor.

If you have a social media account, any social media account . . . you’re an editor of your own news channel.

Sometimes you’re writing “articles” for people to read (posts, announcements, etc.) and sometimes you’re printing other people’s articles (retweets, links, and so on).

You’re a news distributor to your own audience.  Sure you may not have as many readers as the New York Times or even Public Access Channel 92.  But you are an editor.

So what does that have to do with Broadway?

Well, if you’re thinking about using social media to market your show, whether that’s on Broadway or Off Broadway, it’s essential that you remember what the job of an editor is.  Your job is to entertain, educate and enthrall your audience . . . and that means providing them with content that they love.  Your job is not just to talk about what interests you . . . your job is to talk about what interests you, that also interests them . . .  and more importantly informs them.

When using social media to market your show, you can’t be selfish. No, as an editor you have to remember that this isn’t about you, it’s about them.  So pick content for your news feed that’ll keep them coming back for more.

Or you can keep talking about yourself, and what you’re doing, and why that’s exciting . . . but honestly, no one likes a “friend” like that.
