The Road Trip to Broadway: Why I’m Documenting the Journey of Producing My Next Musical
Hal Prince had this very famous tradition. The morning after one of his opening nights, he’d always have a production meeting for his next show.
His reason?
If his show was a hit, he didn’t let the rave reviews go to his head because he had to get to work on his next show. And if it wasn’t a hit, then he had to forget about it – because he was already working on the next show!
I’ve always believed that the real work of producing doesn’t happen on opening night . . . it happens in all the days before and after. And most people never get to see that part.
Right after JOY closed in the summer, we went right into work on The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation.
What’s Happening Now with The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation
If you remember, The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation has been in development for a few years now.
We’ve been digging into casting – who’s available, who’s not.
We’ve done rewrites. Held table readings with our writers and director. All part of the development process of getting a Broadway musical ready.
The Transparent Truth
Here’s where I have to be transparent . . .
At the time of me writing this blog, we don’t have a theatre for The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation.
But during a recent quarterly meeting with my team, they asked me if we could document the journey of getting this musical to Broadway . . . in real time.
I had to think about it.
It reminded me of what we did in 2011 – documenting 100 days leading up to the first performance of the Godspell Broadway revival.
And I remember really enjoying writing those daily posts. (You can read all 100 days here.)
Introducing The Road Trip to Broadway
So I told my team YES . . . we can document the real, behind-the-scenes process of getting Steve Rosen & David Rossmer’s new musical to Broadway.
We’re calling this The Road Trip to Broadway, a new ongoing series documenting the real journey of producing a Broadway musical (IYKYK).
What You’ll See in The Road Trip to Broadway Series
- Short documentary-style updates sharing the behind-the-scenes process and reality of getting the Griswolds to Broadway.
- Pieces of content that aim to educate the unseen/undiscussed parts of a producer’s job.
- A monthly check-in series where a member of my team interviews me, asking the same questions month-to-month to track progress and reflect on previous moments. The first checkpoint video is live now. Watch now.
