There Will Be Two Types of Theater Fans From This Day Forward…
There are moments in the theater that become folklore. “I saw Idina in Wicked.” “I was there when Rent opened.” “I watched Ben Platt sob through Waving Through a Window.”
And my most recent favorite, “Jonathan Groff spit all over me when he sang “Splish Splash.” (I can say that – because they talk about it in the show.)
Well, we’re living through one of those moments right now.
In case you haven’t heard, Gypsy starring Audra McDonald is closing August 17th.
And I’m telling you this not just as a fan . . . but as someone who has a front-row seat to a little slice of history in the making.
Because here’s what I know:
There will be two types of theater fans going forward
1 – Those who saw Audra McDonald in Gypsy.
2 – Those who didn’t.
And you want to be in the first group. Trust me.
This isn’t just a great revival, This is one of the most important performances of our time by one of the greatest living stage actors we have. Period.
Audra is giving a performance that future Mama Roses will study — and then wonder, “How am I gonna come close to that!”
And the whole production? It’s Gypsy like you’ve never seen it. Thanks to the visionary direction of George C. Wolfe and the brilliant choreography of Camille A. Brown. It’s fresh. It’s urgent. It’s everything musical theater should be.
Add in Danny Burstein, Joy Woods, and an ensemble that is stacked with Broadway heavy hitters. . .and what you’ve got is lightning in a bottle.
So, if you’re a theater fan (and I know you are) You know what Gypsy means to the art form. And you know what Audra means.
So don’t miss it.
You’ve got till August 17th.
Go see it.
Because years from now, when someone says,
“Did you ever see Audra McDonald in Gypsy?”
You’ll want to say: “Yes. I was there.”
