Why oh why did I eat at US Egg?

Because someone told me to.

If you’re following my tweet-le-dees, then you know I’m in Scottsdale, Arizona directing the regional premiere of My First Time.

As I was leaving rehearsal last night, my Stage Manager stopped me when she heard where I was staying and said, “You’re right near US Egg!  You have to eat there.  Their breakfast is awesome.”

Time travel to the next morning and guess where I am?  In a huge line at US Egg, where I waited for 30 minutes for their Gentleman Jim’s Famous Omelette

Why did I end up there instead of the Denny’s across the street . . . where there was no wait?  Because I got a strong word of mouth recommendation to go.

We all know that word of mouth is the number one reason we buy tickets to shows, but sometimes it’s easy to forget just how powerful of a weapon it is.

So this week, take a moment to think about all the things you do as a result of word of mouth.  Where you eat, what movie or tv show you watch, what you want to read, everything.  Keep track.

Then keep track of how you obtained that word of mouth.  Did you seek it out?  (i.e. “Can you tell me where there’s a good place to eat breakfast around here?”)  Or did someone feel compelled to tell you about it (i.e. “Oh, you’re right near US Egg.  You have to eat there.”

There is a huge distinction between the two.

And one of them is the reason why there was a 30 minute wait for a so-so omlette.
