Broadway Grosses w/e 8/12/2018: Let’s Hear It For The Boys
The Boys in the Band went out on a high this week at $1,152,649 (a house record for the show), achieving 120% of its potential at The Booth. The show announced recoupment last month, proving that star power might be the secret ingredient to success for summer plays.
Despite many shows posting drops from the previous week, this week’s grosses increased by $1M to $37M, due mostly to the return of Bruce Springsteen. His eye-popping premium prices also helped the average ticket for all shows jump from $128 to $134 this week
While grosses for the season are up 16%, total attendance is only up 3%. Great news for the long-running hits, but this trend will make it harder to convince new audiences that Broadway has affordable options. Good news, however: price conscious theatergoers coming to town in September can mark their calendars for August 15th. That’s when Broadway Week’s 2-for-1 deal goes on sale to the public. You snag a great deal to over a dozen Broadway shows offering discounts.
