Broadway Grosses w/e 12/10/2017: Shopping Season in Full Swing.
You know how sometimes, a doctor doesn’t need fancy tests or equipment to give you a diagnosis? They can just look at you and say . . . “You’ve got X. Now I gotta order an $8,000 test to confirm it.”
Well here’s a great home remedy exam to find out if Broadway is having a good week or not. Ready?
To determine if Broadway is doing well, just try to walk through Times Square. If it takes you more than 3 minutes to go one block, we’re killing it. 🙂
That’s what it was like this weekend, as shoppers flooded the streets from around the world. And they’re not just buying up crap from Canal Street or blue boxes from Tiffany.
They’re buying lots and lots of theater tickets.
Comparing this past week, to the same frame last year, we’re up almost 12.5%. In a year! Of course, a lot of that is attributed to The Boss and the Female Boss (Bette Midler), but when Come From Away is doing $1.3mm, Anastasia is doing over $1mm, and shoot, when Chicago is contributing over $600k to the take after over 20 years on Broadway, it’s a good week.
And then, of course, there’s “The Return of Rylance,” who pulled in $767k in the first week of Farinelli and the King.
These sweet shopper-filled weeks will continue. There will be a little calm before the Christmas storm right before the holiday . . . but then, look the eff out. Because some records are going to be busted up this year.
